Operations to the shoulder fall in to two broad categories:

  • open surgery
  • arthroscopic surgery

Open surgery is usually performed for fractures and shoulder replacements. Over the last 20 years there has been a rapid change in the understanding of shoulder problems and with these advances the techniques of shoulder arthroscopy ( keyhole surgery) have evolved also. Arthroscopcic surgery has several benefits:

  • Smaller scars
  • Less muscle cutting
  • Less postoperative pain
  • More procedures carried out as day surgery
  • Better view of pathology
  • Faster recovery
